Troy Scurlock, 77, of Carthage passed away on May 28 at the Concordia Health and Rehabilitation Center in Carthage. No services were held as the family chose cremation. Sanderson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He was born on June 22, 1940. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, he attended Smith County High School and he was a saved Christian and was of the Missionary Baptist faith. He had been formerly employed at the Hartsville Nuclear Plant project and later at AVCO Aero Structures in Nashville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie Richard “Old Folks” Scurlock and Bessie Mai Gibbs Scurlock; and siblings, Willie Mai Ferrell Scurlock, Gene, Perry, and Estell Scurlock and Thelma Scurlock Bates.
Surviving relatives include, daughter, Angela Brown and husband Terry of Jackson County; siblings, Mike Scurlock and wife, Martha of Elmwood Community, Tony Scurlock of the Hickman Community, Patricia Scurlock Wilkerson and husband, Jerry of South Carthage, Zelma Scurlock Orange and husband, Billy of South Carthage; and two grandchildren.
Vernon M. Ragland
Vernon M. Ragland, 77, passed away on June 1 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Funeral services were held on June 4 at Anderson-Upper Cumberland Funeral Home with Rev. Steven Lee and Rev. Tim Dunavant officiating. Interment followed in the Granville Cemetery.
He was born May 14, 1941 in Gainesboro. He served as Jackson County Trustee for 28 years and was a member of the Gainesboro First United Methodist Church. He loved farming and loved all of his family, especially his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie Savage Ragland and Lettie Ragland; granddaughter, Molly Elizabeth Slagle; brothers, Fowler Ragland, Frank Ragland, Kenneth Ragland and an infant brother; and sisters, Marie Pritchard and an infant sister.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Judy Faye Ragland of Gainesboro; son, Michael and wife, Kelly Ragland of Cookeville; daughters, Lisa and husband, Garry Loftis of Gainesboro and Teresa and husband, Rod Slagle of Cookeville; grandchildren, Lindsay and husband, Joey Meredith, Brooke Loftis, Cassi Slagle and Jackson Ragland; and sisters, Frances Napier, Joann Calabro and Lois Ray; also several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Billy E. Martin
Billy E. Martin, 80, passed away on June 3 at NHC Health Care Center. Funeral services were held on June 6 at Anderson-Upper Cumberland Funeral Home with Bro. Jimmy Anderson officiating. Interment followed in the Pharris Cemetery.
He was born Jan. 25, 1938, in Gainesboro. He was a truck driver.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thurman Martin and Avon Martin; brothers, Harold Martin and Roger Martin; sisters, Nell Hopkins and Bessie Emmitt; and nephew, Christopher Martin.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Juanita Martin of Bloomington Springs; son, Keith and wife, Jamie Martin of New Baltimore, Mich.; daughters, Sharon and husband, Ricky Flatt of Baxter and Tammy and husband, Brian Marlin of Antioch; grandchildren, Ben Flatt, Justin Flatt, Mason Martin and Lily Martin; four great grandchildren; brothers, Danny and wife, Jennie Martin of Gainesboro and Wayne Martin Gainesboro; and sister, Wava and husband, Bobby Allen of Gainesboro; also several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Velma Jo Norton, 73, passed away on June 6 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Funeral services were held on June 10 at Anderson-Upper Cumberland Funeral Home with Bro. Mike Brown, Bro. Johnny Fox and Bro. Ray Notgrass officiating. Interment followed in the Rob Draper Memorial Cemetery.
She was born May 2, 1945 in Jackson County. She owned and operated Jo’s Beauty Shop. She was a member of the Starlighters and Mastersingers and was a member of the Gainesboro Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Norman and Hattie Harris Chaffin; son, Tom Norton; grandson, Trent Norton; brother, Perry N. Chaffin; and sisters, Jamie Chaffin Hix and Mary Lucinda Chaffin Myers.
Surviving relatives include her husband, Gary Norton of Gainesboro; son, Glenn and wife, Kathy Norton of
Lebanon; grandchildren, Taylor and wife, Katie Norton, Gregory Norton, Kimberly Norton and Nicholas Norton; great grandson, Jonathan Taylor Norton; sisters, Matilda Craighead of Cookeville and Geraldine and husband, Jon Collins of Portland and special friend, Sue Fox of Cookeville.
