Shawn Jack Penley

Shawn Jack Penley, 45, of Gainesboro passed away Dec. 9 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. Funeral services were held Dec. 13 at Anderson Upper Cumberland Funeral. Bro. Jimmy Anderson officiated. Interment followed in the Allentown Cemetery in the New Salem Community.

He was born Sept. 15, 1975 in Somerset, Ky. He worked in construction and was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by: father, Herman Jack Penley; sister, Patty Penley Fellows; grandmother, Merle Hawkins Horton and great-grandmother, Delia T. Elrod.

Surviving relatives include: son, Brayden Webster of Indiana; daughter, Ashton Penley (Brandon) Brown of Sparta; mother, Suzy Elrod (Dave) Johnson of Gainesboro; brother, Kristofer Hollis Penley of Gainesboro; sisters, Megan (Brandon) Smallwood Henson of Nashville and Tamara Penley Howard of Dayton, Ohio; step-sisters, Crystal (Mark) Hensley and Amanda (Charlie King) Johnson all of Gainesboro and grandchild, Mallory Brown of Sparta.

Angie Amanda Christian

Angie Amanda Christian, 43, of Gainesboro passed away Dec. 3 at her residence. Funeral services were held Dec. 9 at Anderson Upper Cumberland Funeral Home. Bro. Jimmy Anderson officiated. Interment followed in the Turkeytown Cemetery in Clay County.

She was born Aug. 18, 1977 in Jackson County. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by: son, Jason Goolsby; daughter, Amanda Goolsby; brother, Jackie Christian; sister, Cheri Crabtree; grandparents, Frank and Mae Christian and Lushion and Mary Scott and niece, Kyra Christian.

Surviving relatives include: sons, Payton Christian of Crossville, Cole and AJ Christian and Shawn Crabtree all of Gainesboro; daughters, Kristin Christian of Cookeville and Kaitlin Christian of Crossville; parents, Kenneth Christian, Sr. and Glenda Scott Christian of Gainesboro; grandchildren, Jace and Jaylen of Cookeville and brother: Kenneth Christian of Gainesboro.

Jemmie Elaine Mathis

Jemmie Elaine Mathis, 76, of Gainesboro passed away Dec. 4 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. Graveside services were held Dec. 6 at the Pharris Cemetery in the McCoinsville community. Bro. Mike Fox officiated.

She was born April 18, 1944 in Jackson County. She was a factory worker.

She was preceded in death by: parents, Jim F. Mathis and Lillie Mae Stafford Mathis; sister, Judy Johnson; sister in law, Lassie Mathis; and brother in law, Bobby Johnson.

Surviving relatives include: brothers, Harold Mathis and Jackie (Shirley) Mathis, all of Gainesboro; sisters, Lena Mai Davis of Gainesboro and Janice Cole of Cookeville; and other relatives and many friends.

Richard Morgan Scott

Richard Morgan Scott, 77, of Gainesboro passed away Dec. 4 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. Funeral services were held Dec. 7 at Anderson Upper Cumberland Funeral Home. Bro. Danny Scott officiated. Interment followed in the Fairview Cemetery in the Fairview Community.

He was born Oct. 28, 1943 in Jackson County. He was a farmer and a member of the Harmony Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by: parents, Morgan Scott and Mamie Scott; brothers, Andy Scott, Jerry Scott, Hamp Scott, Walton Scott and Curtis Scott; sisters, Mary Pound, Sally Masters, Myrtle Phillips and Matilda Stewart and special friend, Mary Key.

Surviving relatives include: brother, Odell (Marie) Scott of Cookeville; sisters, Carolyn Burris of Gainesboro and Cathy Stafford of Algood; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

William (Bill) Harrison

William (Bill) Harrison, 85, of Cookeville passed away Dec. 6 at Anderson Upper Cumberland Funeral Home. Bro. Seth Price officiated. Interment followed in the Paran Cemetery in Overton County.

He was born Aug. 9, 1935 in Detroit, Mich. He retired from the U.S. Navy in August 1978 and attended the Cookeville Freewill Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by: parents, Floyd Harrison and Mildred Stockton; wife, Bonnie Harrison and step-father, Woodrow Stockton.

Surviving relatives include: wife, Anna Harrison of Cookeville; daughters, Teresa Harrison of Bellingham, Wash. and Tracie Fowler of Cookeville; special step-sons, Richard Loftis, Ronnie Loftis and Randy Loftis; special step-daughter, Regina Harris; brother, Glenn Stockton of Cookeville; sister, Linda Flatt of Cookeville; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Carrol Wanda Powell Carter

Carrol Wanda Powell Carter, 82, of Baxter passed away Dec. 10 at her residence. Graveside services were held Dec. 12 at Smith County Memorial Gardens in Smith County. Bro. David Lipe officiated.

She was an office worker and was the Valedictorian of her high school class. She was preceded in death by: parents, Bernie Powell and Viola Bushor Powell; and brothers, Monroe, Fred, Bud and Don Powell.

Surviving relatives include: husband, Edward Earl Carter of Baxter; brother Paul Powell of Las Vegas, Nev.; sister- in-law, Frances Kemp of Carthage; special nephew, Craig (Cindy) Powell of Ortonville, Mich.; and special friends and caregivers, Anthony and Phyllis Spark of Baxter.

Kirby Pipkin “Kip” Walker, III

Kirby Pipkin “Kip” Walker III, 62 passed away Nov. 12 in Memphis. A private, family, graveside service was held Dec. 11 at the Rob Draper Memorial Cemetery with Ray Notgrass officiating.

He was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. He attended the University of Mississippi for a Business Bachelor of Arts degree. He worked at Flex, Inc. in Memphis. He also was a volunteer reading instructor for Memphis Literacy Council and Shelby County Schools. He was an avid blues fan and collected regional folk art.

He was preceded in death by: grandparents, Kirby Pipkin Walker, Sr. and Francis Settle Walker and Willis G. Fuqua and Elise Raggio Fuqua.

Surviving relatives include: parents, Kirby Pipkin Walker Jr. and Patricia Fuqua Walker of Gainesboro; brother, William Dominic Walker (Mary) of Knoxville; nephew, Willis Reeder Walker of Panama City Beach, Fla.; and niece, Susan Elise Walker of Knoxville.

Jackie “Jack” Stafford

Jackie “Jack” Stafford, 63, of Gainesboro passed away Dec. 11 in Red Boiling Springs. Funeral services were held Dec. 14 at Anderson Upper Cumberland Funeral Home. Jonah Russell officiated. Interment followed in the John Young Cemetery in the Shiloh Community.

He was born Oct. 29, 1957 in Jackson County. He worked in construction and also farmed.

He was preceded in death by: parents, Ralph Stafford and Notie Stafford; brothers, Terry Stafford and David Stafford and sister, Betty Ann Hamlet.

Surviving relatives include: brothers, Ed Stafford of Gainesboro and Tim (Tina) Stafford of Red Boiling Springs; sisters, Judy Montgomery of Gainesboro and Kathy “Kat” (Jim) Tinsley of Gainesboro; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Frances Scott Leonard Vanderpool

Frances Scott Leonard Vanderpool, 82, of Nashville passed away Dec. 9. A Celebration of Life was held Dec. 13 at West Harpeth Funeral Home with Hubert Cunningham officiating.

She was born Nov. 11, 1938 in Gainesboro. She graduated from Jackson County High School in 1956. She moved to Nashville soon after graduation to attend St. Thomas Nursing School.

She was preceded in death by: parents, Alfred and Ethel Scott; first husband, William (Pee Wee) Leonard and brother, Bobby Scott.

Surviving relatives include: husband, Eddie Vanderpool; children, Tim (Judie) Leonard, Sherri (Larry) Martin, and Sheila (Robert) Brown; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and sister, Joy Scott.
