Jackson County Remembers Fallen Soldiers

Posted

American Legion Post 129 hosted its annual Memorial Day program on Sunday, May 25, at 2 p.m. in Gainesboro Square, offering the community an opportunity to honor and remember those who have died in service to the nation.

The event, themed “Memorial Day 2025: A call to Honor, Reflect and Connect,” featured State Senator Paul Bailey as the guest speaker. The program aimed to provide a space for residents to reflect on the sacrifices made by fallen service members and to connect with the meaning of Memorial Day.

A modest crowd of county residents gathered for the solemn observance. While attendees expressed gratitude for the American Legion’s efforts in organizing the event and for Senator Bailey’s remarks, some also voiced a wish for broader community participation.

“Freedom isn’t free,” was a sentiment frequently heard, underscoring the belief among many that the importance of Memorial Day should resonate more widely within the community. The ceremony served as a poignant reminder of the heavy cost of liberty and the ongoing need to remember those who paid the ultimate price.

Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday of May, is a federal holiday in the United States dedicated to remembering and honoring military personnel who died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. It is a time for national reflection and remembrance, often marked by ceremonies, parades, and moments of silence.
